Passage
1 Thessalonians 5
Book: 1 Thessalonians · ASV / WEB / KJV / YLT
Immediate context (±2 verses)
ASV
- But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that aught be written unto you. 2. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 3. When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall in no wise escape. 4. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief: 5. for ye are all sons of light, and sons of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness; 6. so then let us not sleep, as do the rest, but let us watch and be sober. 7. For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that are drunken are drunken in the night. 8. But let us, since we are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation. 9. For God appointed us not unto wrath, but unto the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10. who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. 11. Wherefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as also ye do. 12. But we beseech you, brethren, to know them that labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; 13. and to esteem them exceeding highly in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves. 14. And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be longsuffering toward all. 15. See that none render unto any one evil for evil; but always follow after that which is good, one toward another, and toward all. 16. Rejoice always; 17. pray without ceasing; 18. in everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus to you-ward. 19. Quench not the Spirit; 20. despise not prophesyings; 21. prove all things; hold fast that which is good; 22. abstain from every form of evil. 23. And the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved entire, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24. Faithful is he that calleth you, who will also do it. 25. Brethren, pray for us. 26. Salute all the brethren with a holy kiss. 27. I adjure you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the brethren. 28. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. (1 Thessalonians 5:1-28, ASV)

- But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything be written to you. 2. For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night. 3. For when they are saying, “Peace and safety,” then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman; and they will in no way escape. 4. But you, brothers, aren’t in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief. 5. You are all children of light, and children of the day. We don’t belong to the night, nor to darkness, 6. so then let’s not sleep, as the rest do, but let’s watch and be sober. 7. For those who sleep, sleep in the night; and those who are drunk are drunk in the night. 8. But let us, since we belong to the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and, for a helmet, the hope of salvation. 9. But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you, 13. and to respect and honor them in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves. 14. We exhort you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, encourage the faint-hearted, support the weak, be patient toward all. 15. See that no one returns evil for evil to anyone, but always follow after that which is good, for one another, and for all. 16. Rejoice always. 17. Pray without ceasing. 18. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you. 19. Don’t quench the Spirit. 20. Don’t despise prophesies. 21. Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good. 22. Abstain from every form of evil. 23. May the God of peace himself sanctify you completely. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24. He who calls you is faithful, who will also do it. 25. Brothers, pray for us. 26. Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. 27. I solemnly command you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the holy brothers. 28. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. YLT
- And concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need of my writing to you, 2. for yourselves have known thoroughly that the day of the Lord as a thief in the night doth so come, 3. for when they may say, Peace and surety, then sudden destruction doth stand by them, as the travail [doth] her who is with child, and they shall not escape; 4. and ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day may catch you as a thief; 5. all ye are sons of light, and sons of day; we are not of night, nor of darkness, 6. so, then, we may not sleep as also the others, but watch and be sober, 7. for those sleeping, by night do sleep, and those making themselves drunk, by night are drunken, 8. and we, being of the day, let us be sober, putting on a breastplate of faith and love, and an helmet, a hope of salvation, 9. because God did not appoint us to anger, but to the acquiring of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10. who did die for us, that whether we wake, whether we sleep, together with him we may live; 11. wherefore, comfort ye one another, and build ye up, one the one, as also ye do. 12. And we ask you, brethren, to know those labouring among you, and leading you in the Lord, and admonishing you, 13. and to esteem them very abundantly in love, because of their work; be at peace among yourselves; 14. and we exhort you, brethren, admonish the disorderly, comfort the feeble-minded, support the infirm, be patient unto all; 15. see no one evil for evil may render to any one, but always that which is good pursue ye, both to one another and to all; 16. always rejoice ye; 17. continually pray ye; 18. in every thing give thanks, for this [is] the will of God in Christ Jesus in regard to you. 19. The Spirit quench not; 20. prophesyings despise not; 21. all things prove; that which is good hold fast; 22. from all appearance of evil abstain ye; 23. and the God of the peace Himself sanctify you wholly, and may your whole spirit, and soul, and body, be preserved unblameably in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ; 24. stedfast is He who is calling you, who also will do [it]. 25. Brethren, pray for us; 26. salute all the brethren in an holy kiss; 27. I charge you [by] the Lord, that the letter be read to all the holy brethren; 28. the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [is] with you! Amen. (1 Thessalonians 5:1-28, YLT)

Setting
- Speaker: Paul, writing with Silvanus (Silas) and Timothy, who are named as co-senders in the opening (1 Thess 1:1).
- Audience: The church in Thessalonica, capital of the Roman province of Macedonia; a largely Gentile congregation of recent converts (1 Thess 1:9) founded on the second missionary journey (Acts 17:1-9).
- Location: Written from Corinth, shortly after Timothy returned with news of the young church (1 Thess 3:6).
- Time period: c. AD 50-51. The Gallio inscription from Delphi fixes Paul in Corinth around AD 51-52 (Acts 18:12), which makes this letter either the earliest or one of the two earliest surviving Pauline writings, roughly twenty years after the crucifixion.
Theological reading
The letter's final chapter: the day of the Lord, life together in the church, and closing prayer.
The day of the Lord (verses 1-11). Having answered the question about believers who have died (4:13-18), Paul turns to "the times and the seasons" and declines to give a timetable: "the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night" (5:2). The section is not about when but about how to live: "let us watch and be sober" (5:6). It ends on assurance, "God appointed us not into wrath, but unto the obtaining of salvation" (5:9), and on mutual encouragement (5:11). See Eschatology.
Life in the church (verses 12-22). A run of short commands: respect for those who labor and lead (5:12-13), care matched to need, "admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak" (5:14), refusal to repay evil (5:15), and the three commands "Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks" (5:16-18). Verses 19-22 deal with prophecy in the assembly: do not quench or despise it, but "prove all things."
Closing (verses 23-28). The prayer that "the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly" names "your spirit and soul and body" (5:23) and rests on God's faithfulness, "who will also do it" (5:24). Paul then adjures the church "that this epistle be read unto all the brethren" (5:27), evidence that his letters were meant for public reading in the gathered congregation.
A note on the KJV subscription. The KJV ends the letter with "The first epistle to the Thessalonians was written from Athens." The subscriptions are later scribal additions, not part of the text. This one conflicts with the letter itself: Paul says he was left "at Athens alone" and sent Timothy away (3:1-2), and writes after Timothy "came even now unto us from you" (3:6), a return Acts 18:5 places at Corinth.

Why these four translations
ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.
The four:
- ASV (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
- WEB (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
- KJV (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
- YLT (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
